Yorkshire Dales Glamping
Nestled in the rolling hills overlooking the breathtaking Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales, this unique A-frame glamping pod development was conceived as a low-impact, off-grid retreat for eco-conscious travellers. The brief was clear: to design a small cluster of beautiful, sustainable, and comfortable A-frame pods that blend seamlessly with the landscape while showcasing circular design principles, local craft, and self-sufficiency.
The Vision
The client, an independent Yorkshire-based Airbnb host, approached us with a desire to create a retreat that would attract visitors looking for reconnection with nature, peace, and simplicity. Sustainability wasn’t a box-tick — it was the core value. The pods had to be highly efficient, made from reclaimed and locally sourced materials, and built using local trades to support the regional economy and craft traditions.
Our Approach
We began with a site-sensitive strategy, carefully positioning each pod to maximise natural views across the tarn while maintaining privacy and protecting the surrounding ecology. The compact A-frame design was chosen for its minimal footprint, ease of construction, and ability to withstand the Yorkshire elements. Materials were selected based on performance, provenance, and environmental impact — including reclaimed timber cladding, sheep’s wool insulation, and stone salvaged from nearby farms.
Sustainable Systems
Each pod operates off-grid, supported by a suite of intelligent, low-impact systems:
Solar panels provide renewable energy year-round
Air source heat pumps offer efficient heating in colder months
Greywater systems recycle wastewater for use in landscaping
Composting toilets minimise water usage and environmental disturbance
Natural ventilation and passive solar gain were prioritised to reduce energy dependency, and each pod features generous glazing with views onto the moorland — inviting the outdoors in.
Community & Craft
From concept to completion, we championed collaboration with local craftspeople — from joiners and stonemasons to metalworkers — ensuring each element reflected the spirit and heritage of the area. Interiors were kept minimal but warm, with raw timber finishes, natural fabrics, and handmade furniture that celebrates imperfection and texture.
Outcome
The result is a quiet, restorative experience for visitors — a design-led yet deeply rooted glamping site that respects the land and supports sustainable tourism in the Dales. The project has set a benchmark for thoughtful rural development, offering an example of how modern comfort and environmental responsibility can work hand in hand.
